Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH)

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is a state University established in 1925. Today the main campus extends over an area of 429 metric acres in the heart of the city and the number of enrolled students is about 67.000 in 41 departments that cover the full range of scientific disciples.AUTH participates in COMANDER with its Photonic Systems and Networks (PhosNET) Research Group, which is part of the Computer Architecture and Communications Laboratory (CACLab) of the Department of Informatics. PhosNET employs 2 academic staff members, 3 Senior Research Associate and 4 PhD students and its main research activities lie in the field of photonics, material science and light-matter interaction and signal processing hardware both by electronic as well as by optical means. The main research activities of PhosNet extend along a broad area in the field of photonic technologies, including optical interconnects, optical circuit design, optical routing/switching systems, optical signal processing, high capacity optical transmission, optical packet/burst and label switching networks, and optical wireless networks. PhosNET members have significant presence and a proven track record with successful participation and leadership in a number of European projects (MULTIWAVE, LASAGNE, MUFINS, e-Photon/One, ESPRIT DO-ALL, BOOM, DICONET, IASiS) and are currently coordinating the FP7 project PLATON and RAMPLAS.

Within COMANDER AUTH will provide the architectural basis for building the converged network of COMANDER, as well as the medium transparent MAC protocols that will provide the network intelligence and dynamic resource allocation.

Technical University of Berlin (TUB)

The Research Center of Microperipheric Technologies (Forschungsschwerpunkt Technologien der Mikroperipherik) founded in 1987 at TU Berlin supported by the Bundesminister für Forschung und Technologie and the Berlin Senate. It comprehends two specific fields Sensorics and Interconnection and Packaging Technologies. Since then it had been headed by Prof. Reichl and focuses on following topics: Packaging concepts for electrooptical ICT systems, including the integration of waveguides in the board or the packaging of optical semiconductors; Design methodology for software, hardware, and manufacturing technology codesign; Packaging concepts for e-Grains and the integration of heterogeneous systems; Packaging of wireless and HF applications, RFID systems and flexible circuits; MEMS packaging, including for silicon microphones, biosensors or mechanical sensors; Integration of the power supply into the package; Development of environmental and sustainability strategies for electronics and implementing these in technology projects. Research Center of Microperipheric Technologies cooperates with the Fraunhofer-Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (Fraunhofer Institut für Zuverlässigkeit und Mikrointegration, Fraunhofer IZM); the cooperation results in a common use of equipment, facilities and infrastructure and in the cooperation in research projects.

Within COMANDER TUB will provide the integratable 60GHz antenna design that will constitute the wireless access part of the COMANDER’s Access Point Module (APM). After the completion of the optical components, including the wired access counterpart, TUB will proceed to the final packaging of the APM.

Iquadrat (IQU)

IQU has been founded in 1997 and has a focused business plan specifically intent on delivering a “new generation of research tools for system level evaluation of wireless cognitive systems”. The company includes a “radio access group” with extensive know-how in system level simulation methodologies for Radio Access Technologies that include 802.11, WiMax, and Long Term Evolutionary RAN. Besides the main stream in development, IQU also acts as a consulting company for the planning of wireless networks, being currently involved in projects with the mobile operators, and several public authorities. IQU is participating in the ENIAC projects ARTEMOS targeting the design of reconfigurable receivers, and ENIAC E2SG project for Energy control over Smart Grids. Moreover IQU is participating in the Marie Curie project CROSSFIRE for quality of experience designs in heterogeneous networks and Marie curie project CodeLance for network coding designs for video surveillance. IQU is also in the Celtic project GREEN-T for Low Power Consumption Front-Ends. Starting 2013, IQU is enrolled in the new projects FP7 DIWINE for cloud computing, Artemis Copcams for cooperative techniques for video transmission and the ENIAC ESEE project for energy efficient transmission techniques.

Within COMANDER Iquadrat will lead the effort to introduce and implement a Network Coding scheme to bimodal Fiber-Wireless networks.

Phoenix Software B.V. (PHX)

Phoenix Software B.V. is an independent high-tech company that develops, supplies and supports world class software solutions for micro/nano technology corporations and institutes. Founded in 2003, PHX provides a unique mask lay-out, process flow design and simulation environment for the micro and nano technology marketplace. In addition PHX offers a uniquely targeted Manufacturing Execution System and Technology Knowledge Base: the Living Database. Bright Photonics B.V. that also participates in the Dutch consortium of companies lead by PHX as explained in section B4.1, is a start-up fabless design house for application-specific photonic integrated circuits (ASPICs), founded in 2010. Its goal is to bring ASPICs into reach of SMEs and institutions by translating product ideas into an integrated circuit design. Bright offers full design, design support, measurement know-how, and design libraries. Currently PHX and BP participate in a plethora of projects such as: I)PhoxTrot , an FP7 project focusing on high-performance, low-energy and cost and small-size optical interconnects across the different hierarchy levels in data center and high-performance computing systems II)EuroPIC, an FP7 project targeting the application of photonic integrated micro-systems in advanced products within reach of SMEs by reducing their required investment costs. III)PARADIGM, an FP7 project targeting a paradigm shift in the development and manufacturing of photonics integrated components based on Indium Phosphide (InP).

Within COMANDER PHX will serve as the mask designer of the optical part of COMANDER’s Access Point Module product, drawing from their expertise on design and development of Application-Specific Photonic Integrated Circuits (ASPICs) for OEM customers.
